General FAQs
How much time does a sorority take? Will I have time for school?
You can commit as much or as little time as you wish. At IU Southeast, most chapters have Sunday evening meetings and offer other optional sisterhood, scholarship, and philanthropy opportunities throughout the week. Your first semester will give you plenty of chances to meet other Greeks through social events and campus-wide activities. In the Greek community, there is always a wide variety of activities for you to be involved with.
Will I still be able to work while in a sorority?
In today's world, very few students can attend college without outside employment. Chapters recognize this and work with members to meet financial and attendance obligations. Many students find sorority membership an advantage in that networking with alumnae sometimes produces job possibilities.
Will being in a sorority cause me to lose touch with my high school friends?
No! Joining a sorority will allow you to expand your group of friends by meeting new people, but also provides activities that you may be able to invite your high school friends to attend with you.
I've heard that chapters have different reputations. How do I handle this information?
The only opinion of a chapter that should matter is yours. Each chapter is different from campus to campus and from year to year. If you allow someone else's perceptions influence you, then you may not feel satisfied with your choices during recruitment. Remember that each chapter is made up of many different women with different talents and qualities. It is very crucial to keep an open mind about each chapter throughout the process and not to dismiss a certain chapter based on rumors or stereotypes.
I am a legacy to a sorority. What should I know?
Every woman who goes through recruitment is considered on an individual basis; a legacy is no more obligated to join a particular chapter than the chapter is obligated to offer her a bid. You and the chapter should be looking for compatibility, not necessarily a family connection to the group. More specific questions regarding legacies should be directed to the individual chapters.
Recruitment
Can I start the registration process and finish it later?
You must fully complete the Recruitment Registration Application before our system recognizes your account. If you complete it halfway through, your account will not be valid and you will not be able to log in, forcing you to remake an account. Please completely register and pay in one sitting!
What should I expect after I register for recruitment?
Immediately after registering, you will receive a confirmation email. We will be sending out newsletters throughout summer telling you more amazing things about sorority life! The 2019 Recruitment Guide will be available to you at the end of summer, although you will receive a hard-copy on Meet Your Gamma Chi Night. Your Gamma Chi will also be reaching out to you before the fall semester begins.
If I participate in recruitment, am I obligated to join a chapter?
No. Many women choose to go through recruitment to meet people and make new friends. Recruitment is an opportunity for you to visit the chapters, get a glimpse of Greek Life, and assess whether or not you would like to be a part of the Greek community.
Does participation in recruitment guarantee a bid for membership?
No. Although majority of the women participating in recruitment are invited to join a chapter at the end of recruitment, it is possible to go through and not be offered a bid. Recruitment is a mutual selection process, and as such, there are many different outcomes to this process. Each sorority at IU Southeast has their own membership criteria, oftentimes governed by their national organization, which they use to make selections. As such, unfortunately, we also have women who are completely released from the recruitment process, although this number is relatively low.
What if I only want to be in a certain sorority?
The most important thing to do during recruitment is to keep an open mind. Sorority membership is more than wearing Greek letters. It is giving your time and energy to the chapter, agreeing to abide by all the rules and regulations, and meeting expectations. Don't make a decision based on stereotypes and others' opinions. Keep an open mind and make a decision that is right for you!
What if I have class during Recruitment Weekend?
All of the parties during recruitment are scheduled later in the day to allow you to go to class or work beforehand. However, if you do have a later class or any other conflicts during Recruitment Weekend, make sure to list it under the "Accommodations and Needs" section when registering, or email iusvprecruitment@gmail.com if you have already registered.
If you have any other questions regarding Panhellenic, sorority life, or the recruitment process, please submit them via the Contact page and we will get back to you as soon as we can!
